Heidi Montag’s Dangerous Exercise Plan

Heidi Montag joined ex-Hugh Hefner fiance Crystal Harris this weekend at the MGM Grand's Wet Republic for a VIP pool party. Montag and Harris partied on what would have been Crystal Harris' wedding day to Hefner, but it was Montag's slim physique that grabbed headlines.

According to Popeater.com, the reality-tv star and plastic surgery fan dropped down to 103 pounds for the event by exercising for 14 hours a day. According to Montag, she had been overweight at 130 pounds and chose to slim down for the pool party by running and lifting weights.

The same article reported that the star claimed she worked out from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. everyday. While running and lifting weights seems reasonable, it doesn't seem possible that anyone could exercise for 14 hours every day. Even if it is possible, it is not recommended. Guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine put Montag's excessive workout plan into perspective. ACSM recommends doing moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week, or doing vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, three days a week. In terms of weight lifting, ACSM recommends doing 8 to 10 strength-training exercises, with 8 to 12 repetitions of each exercise twice a week.

Experts recommend that a reasonable expectation for weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. Losing more than that amount probably means that you are losing water weight or muscle mass. It doesn't make sense that Heidi Montag would lift weights for hours every day only to lose the muscle she earned by over-exercising. While running is great for burning calories, workouts with weights help to shape and tone the body and make it look great in a bikini. Montag would probably have been better off to keep the workouts short to gain the full benefits of her workout. Got a pool party planned for the summer? Your best bet is to avoid the Montag routine and plan ahead. Pair cardio exercise with weight lifting, but keep the workouts short and consistent.
