LOS ANGELES, California (AFP) – Mexico won a sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup title by rallying to score four unanswered goals and defeat the United States 4-2 in championship game at the Rose Bowl stadium.

Pablo Barrera scored his second goal of the game in the 50th minute to break a 2-2 deadlock and Giovani Dos Santos added an insurance goal in the 76th minute for the Mexicans, who trailed 2-0 after only 23 minutes.

"There's no better moment than victory," Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre said. "Everything else is in the past now."

Mexico on Saturday won their second title in a row in the biennial North American regional tournament, defeating the United States in the final as they did in 2009, and qualified for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Mexico's Javier Hernandez, who plays for Manchester United in the English Premier League, was named the Gold Cup Most Valuable Player. Hernandez led this year's tournament with seven goals.
Mexico and the US team have won 10 of the 11 Gold Cups contested since the tournament took its current form in 1991.

Dos Santos netted one of the prettiest goals of the tournament, dancing around US goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had charged out of his net after a loose ball, then spun past two stunned defenders and chipped the ball over a leaping Eric Lichaj into the upper right corner of the net.

The Americans played well defensively in the tournament until they came up against the explosive Mexican attack. American captain Carlos Bocanegra said there was confusion among the US defenders Saturday.
"It was an overall frustrating night," Bocanegra said. "Defensively we weren't good enough."

A sold-out crowd of 93,420 at the Rose Bowl was the largest ever for a Gold Cup game in the USA. The pro-Mexican crowd was clad mainly in green and cheering loudly for the visitors despite the match being played on US soil.

American fans tried to get chants of "USA, USA" going in the first half but they were quickly drowned out by the "El Tri" supporters with a chorus of "Ole, Ole".

Michael Bradley scored in the eighth minute and Landon Donovan added another goal in the 23rd minute as the Americans jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Donovan's goal was his 13th in Gold Cup play, giving him the all-time tournament lead.

"You're worried and you don't want to become disorganized," de la Torre said. "The United States was playing well. They surprised us with the first goal. We pushed too far up in the second goal. Fortunately, we were able to maintain our calm."

Barrera then scored his first goal in the 29th minute and Andres Guardado, who was playing with an injured left ankle, netted the equalizer in the 36th minute, setting the stage for a second half dominated by the Mexican squad.

Barrera put his 17-yard shot just inside the right post to snap Howard's tournament shutout streak at 351 minutes.

Guardado tied it by pouncing on a loose ball about five yards out to tie after Dos Santos started the play with a pass from the right side that bounced off Lichaj.

"Our back line couldn't figure it out," Bocanegra said. "They spread us out and we weren't all on the same page."

Flyers make two trades, sign goaltender

Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, two key cogs in the Philadelphia Flyers' run to the Stanley Cup finals a year ago, were dealt in a pair of trades Thursday that shake up the franchise on the eve of the draft.

The moves cleared needed salary cap space to sign goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, a deal the club announced later in the day. TSN reported it was a $51-million, nine-year deal. The Flyers acquired the rights to Bryzgalov, 31, from Phoenix this month.

The Flyers moved over $100 million in salary in Thursday's deals that sent Richards to the Kings and Carter to the Blue Jackets. Richards has nine years left on a 12-year extension and Carter agreed in November to a $58-million, 11-year pact.

Richards was traded for forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds and a second-round pick. Carter was traded for forward Jake Voracek and Columbus' first- and third-round picks.

- Andrei Markov has signed a three-year, $17.25 million contract to stay with the Canadiens through the 2013-14 season.

- The NHL salary cap is rising for the sixth consecutive season since being established in 2005, this time an increase of $4.9 million to $64.3 million.

The Kings took a detour through Milwaukee to get him, but hey, who wouldn't go a few extra miles for a rock star? For Jimmer Fredette? He tweets, he shoots, he scores.
He stars in a documentary.

He is a one-man, predraft publicity machine.

So now that he's here – or almost here – does he play bass or lead guitar? Is he part of the opening act or does he come off the bench? And what does he know about funding mechanisms and construction of new arenas? (Seriously, we would have asked these questions had Fredette's handlers made him available to the Sacramento media in a late-night, post-draft teleconference, as is the NBA norm. Now we'll just wait for the news conference that is tentatively scheduled for Saturday).

"When (the Kings) made the trade to No. 10, I thought it was a possibility," Fredette was quoted by NBA media types back in New York. " … They liked me out there, the Maloofs and coach (Paul Westphal) and (Geoff) Petrie. And now it's a reality."

Fredette's selection occurred after an unusually active draft day for Petrie. In a three-team deal in which the Kings moved down from the No. 7 to the No. 10 pick, the Kings also sent point guard Beno Udrih to Milwaukee for former Kings small forward John Salmons.

"We got a very high-quality small forward at a position we really struggled last year, and we felt we could get a really good player at 10," said Petrie.

The Kings hoped to address some of their big weaknesses – perimeter shooting, starting small forward and playmaking – but Salmons' return is curious.

Basketball is still played with five players and one ball. The Kings frightful death-by-dribbling offense might make a comeback given there isn't a facilitator among a projected starting unit of Salmons, Tyreke Evans, Marcus Thornton, DeMarcus Cousins and Jason Thompson.

Someone? Anyone? OK, Cousins is an excellent passer, though he suffers from bouts of carelessness and sticky fingers.

Asked whether there were enough basketballs to go around, Petrie laughed. "You only can play with one," he joked.

Petrie quickly added that the club has retained its salary cap flexibility and anticipates being very aggressive in free agency. The plan is to re-sign Thornton, who is expected to form a three-guard rotation with Evans and Fredette. The hope, of course, is that Fredette comes to training camp and quickly establishes that he is more similar to Stephen Curry or Mark Price than Steve Kerr, J.J. Redick or (gulp) Adam Morrison.

"I think of him as a point guard," said coach Paul Westphal. " … I don't think there's going to be a real difficult learning curve for him."

In his senior year at BYU, the 6-foot-2 Fredette led the nation in scoring (28.9 points per game) and captured most of the major player of the year awards, including Naismith, Wooden, Associated Press. He set school records in points, three-pointers and games played.

Fredette is regarded as an excellent deep shooter and characterized by some NBA types (among them Jerry West) as more of a shotmaker than shooter, as someone capable of creating for others as well as himself. The biggest concern with Fredette is lack of defense.

But that's nothing new with rookies. That's something that can be learned. It's his "fundamental" skills, as Westphal suggested, that most excites the Kings and their fans, as well as Fredette's legion of followers.

The documentary ended last night, though. "This is the last day of the 'Follow Jimmer' YouTube thing," Fredette told the media in New York. "It was a good thing. It shows what a college basketball player has to go through to get into the NBA."

So for starters, maybe Fredette should have a little chat with his handlers? Based on his comments in New York, he sounded pleased to be joining the Kings. "The style of play that I like, the up-tempo system, ball screens," said Fredette. "It plays right into my style. That's how I played by whole entire life." Next time? Set aside the camera. Make that call.

Lekic Gives Revolution a tie

FOXBOROUGH — So much for creating scoring chances. The Revolution appear to have solved that problem by switching to a 4-4-2 alignment. As for actually putting the ball in the net, though, the Revolution still have a ways to go.
The Revolution snapped their home scoreless streak last night in a 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire, but they squandered several opportunities that could have put an end to their six-game winless streak.
