June 18 (Bloomberg) -- United Airlines resumed flights today after a five-hour computer outage late yesterday stranded passengers in U.S. cities, including Chicago, Denver and San Francisco.

"The airline experienced a network connectivity issue at about 7:15 p.m. local time, which was resolved through troubleshooting procedures and restored at midnight," the airline said in a statement on its website today.

The carrier waived change fees for customers on flights yesterday and today to and from airports in Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, and Newark, New Jersey, as well as Guam and Tokyo, the airline said in a statement.

There will be residual delays today and tomorrow, said Alexandria Marren, senior vice president of system operations control, in the statement.

The disruption affected United's flight departures, airport processing and reservations systems, including access to its website, the company said.

United didn't immediately respond to a voicemail and e-mail from Bloomberg News seeking comment on what caused yesterday's computer disruption.

UAL Corp. merged with Continental Airlines Inc. in October, surpassing Delta Airlines Inc. as the world's biggest carrier and becoming United Continental Holdings Inc.
